Orthodontic practice in Bordeaux

Lingual WIN technique

Our techniques

  • Lingual orthodontics consists of correcting the incorrect position of the teeth using a fixed appliance bonded to the inner surface of the teeth.
  • This innovative technique allows older teenagers and adults to regain a smile without it being noticeable.
  • A lingual bracket works the same way as a traditional fixed appliance with perfect control of the teeth while being invisible. The only person who knows you are wearing a dental appliance is you.
  • This appliance is fixed and individualized: the brackets, glued on your teeth, as well as the wires that allow the alignment, are made for your mouth only; it is therefore a unique and specific appliance for you.

Adaptation

Adaptation takes an average of 3 to 4 weeks, and varies from patient to patient. The difficulties encountered concern :

1- Speech:

You will have difficulty positioning the tongue. This is how you can hear a little lisp:

You have to speak slowly,
Avoid “s” at first.
We advise you to consult a physiotherapist specialized in maxillofacial surgery to help you position your tongue properly.

2- Difficulties in eating:

Teeth are sensitive the first few days.
Fasteners prevent the bottom teeth from touching
You will therefore have to compensate your diet by favouring soft foods at first.

You will also have to adjust your diet throughout the treatment: the brackets, which are attached to your teeth, can come off if you eat hard foods, so some foods should be avoided.
Here is a non-exhaustive list: chewing gums, caramels, nougat, nougatine…
Avoid biting or chewing hard foods such as apples and baguette sandwiches.
You should also avoid biting your nails.

3- Pain:

Teeth are sometimes sensitive because they shift. You should not hesitate to take a painkiller (especially paracetamol, which we will prescribe). It is advisable to eat softly for several days.
Braces can sometimes irritate the tongue, you can put a pellet of orthodontic wax in the area where the appliance is bothering (given during the installation of the appliance or available in pharmacy) or use Hyalugel Spray which allows to anesthetize the painful area.

Brushing your teeth

The elastics are used to hook the top unit with the bottom one. They allow the teeth to be placed in the right position for optimal interlocking. Be careful! It is important to follow the orthodontist’s prescription.

12/24h = only at night and 24/24h = day + night

If the teeth are not brushed properly, the gums will become inflamed and the teeth will not move properly. This is why with this type of device, a new brushing technique must be adapted. We recommend a toothbrush with soft bristles, manual or electric

La interdental brush is a mandatory complement to the toothbrush: it allows you to clean areas that are otherwise inaccessible, under braces and under the wire.
So:

Brush your teeth after each main meal.

Examine the cleanliness of your teeth in a mirror.

Brush your gums as well.

Elastic bands

They are very often necessary.

The elastics are used to hook the top unit with the bottom one. They allow the teeth to be placed in the right position for optimal interlocking. Be careful! Il est important de bien respecter la prescription de l’orthodontiste.

12/24h = only at night and 24/24h = day + night

If you wear the elastics correctly, the treatment will not be delayed.

If a clip comes off, you have to stop putting the elastics on both sides.

You can stop by the dental office to pick up elastics if you don’t have enough.

Emergencies: what are they?

An unstuck clip: it is important to recover the detached clamp if it is out of the dental appliance and to bring it back to the next appointment; do not panic, it is not an absolute emergency, think of warning us by email (info@orthodontie-bordeaux.com) or by phone, and we will advise you of the necessity or not to place you an appointment more quickly, or to lengthen the time of the next appointment in order to glue the clamp again. A stinging wire: put some wax on the end of the wire, and let us know; we will make an emergency appointment to bend or cut the wire.
Please don’t forget to bring back the loose ties.

The appointments

They are long, usually 30 to 40 minutes. Ideally in the morning or early afternoon (before 4pm).

They are approximately every 4 to 8 weeks.
